What is EECP therapy?

Enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) is a treatment for chronic heart failure and coronary heart disease. The treatment involves placing inflatable cuffs on the legs and compressing and releasing the blood vessels in a synchronized manner with the patient’s heartbeat. By doing so, EECP increases blood flow to the heart and can improve symptoms of heart failure.

Enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP):

Enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) is a treatment for cardiovascular disease that uses compression of the lower extremities to assist the heart in pumping blood. The compression doctors apply in a rhythmic fashion, along with the patient’s heart rate, and is important to improve blood flow to the coronary arteries and reduce the workload of the heart. It is typically in use as a treatment for angina, a condition characterized by chest pain or discomfort that occurs when the heart is not getting enough oxygen-rich blood. EECP is also sometimes in use to treat heart failure, although the evidence for its effectiveness in this condition is not as strong.

This is generally considered to be safe, although there are some risks associated with the procedure. The most common side effect is bruising or soreness in the legs. There is also a small risk of blood clots developing in the legs, which could potentially travel to the lungs and cause a pulmonary embolism. EECP is usually performed as an outpatient procedure, and most people are able to return to their normal activities within a few days. The procedure typically consists of a series of treatments, each lasting about one hour, given three times per week for a total of six to 12 weeks.

The exact mechanism by which EECP works is not entirely understood, but it is thought to improve blood flow to the heart by increasing the pressure in the arteries and veins in the legs. This increase in pressure is thought to help the heart pump blood more effectively.

What conditions can EECP therapy treat?

EECP therapy has been shown to be an effective treatment option for a variety of conditions. The therapy can also be in use to improve the quality of life and reduce symptoms in heart patients. In addition, EECP therapy has been shown to be effective in treating cardiomyopathy, an enlarged heart condition. Conditions treatable include:

  • Pain in chest
  • Shortness of breath (dyspnea)
  • Cardiac syndrome X (a type of angina).
  • Cerebrovascular disease.
  • Heartbeat stop
  • Kidney (kidney) failure.
  • Left ventricular dysfunction (early stage of heart failure).
  • Lung disease (pulmonary disease).
  • Peripheral arterial (vascular) disease (PAD).

How does EECP therapy work?

  • EECP therapy is a treatment for cardiovascular disease that uses external counterpulsation to enhance blood circulation. The therapy involves applying pressure to the legs and torso during heartbeats, with the aim of increasing blood flow to the heart.
  • The specific mechanism by which EECP therapy works is not fully understood, but it is thought to improve blood flow in the coronary arteries and reduce the workload of the heart. EECP therapy may also help to improve the function of the heart’s pumping action and reduce the risk of future heart attacks.
  • A course of EECP therapy typically consists of 30-36 sessions, carried out over a period of 6-8 weeks. The therapy is typically well tolerated, with the most common side effects being mild discomfort and bruising.
  • There is evidence from clinical trials that EECP therapy can improve symptoms in patients with cardiovascular disease, and it is considered a safe and effective treatment option.

Who is eligible for EECP therapy?

EECP is not for everyone. You may not be a good candidate for EECP if you have certain heart conditions such as a recent heart attack, unstable angina, certain types of heart rhythm disorders, or congestive heart failure. You also may not be a good candidate if you have certain other medical conditions such as severe blood pressure, bleeding disorders, or certain types of cancer. Your doctor will determine if you are a good candidate for EECP therapy. If you are, you can expect to see an improvement in your symptoms within a few weeks of starting treatment. In some cases, EECP may be continued on a maintenance basis to help keep your symptoms under control.

Who should not undergo EECP therapy?

EECP therapy is not appropriate for everyone. There are certain medical conditions that are not for EECP therapy. These include:

  • Severe arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Aortic aneurysm
  • Recent heart attack or stroke
  • Active bleeding
  • Pregnancy

People with any of these conditions should not undergo EECP therapy. In addition, people who are allergic to aspirin or other anti-inflammatory medications should not receive EECP therapy, as these medications are often in use during treatment.

Is EECP therapy a normal procedure?

https://oplusheartcentre.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/eecp-therapy-normal.webp

EECP therapy is a non-invasive procedure that uses gentle, but rhythmic, pressure waves to increase blood flow in the coronary arteries. The therapy doctors perform is through a device that is placed on the patient’s chest. The device has three components: a pressure wave generator, a pressure wave delivery system, and a monitoring system.

The pressure wave generator produces the pressure waves that are delivered to the patient’s chest through the pressure wave delivery system. The delivery system consists of a series of inflatable cuff devices that are placed around the patient’s chest. The cuff devices are connected to the pressure wave generator by tubing.

The monitor system is in use to track the patient’s heart rate and blood pressure during the therapy session. The monitor system is also in use to adjust the pressure wave generator to deliver the optimal amount of pressure to the patient’s chest.

What Happens Before EECP Therapy?

Before EECP therapy, a person will need to have a physical examination and a cardiac stress test. The physical examination will check for any medical conditions that could make EECP therapy unsuitable. The cardiac stress test is in use to see how well the heart is working and how much blood the heart pumps.

What happens during EECP therapy?

EECP therapy is usually started at a low level and the amount of time the device is worn is increased each week. The total number of hours of EECP therapy required varies from person to person, but most people will need at least 30 hours of therapy. EECP therapy is safe and effective, and there are usually no side effects. However, a small number of people may experience fatigue, muscle aches, or skin irritation. If you are considering EECP therapy, talk to your doctor to see if it is right for you.

How will I feel after EECP therapy?

Most people who undergo EECP therapy report feeling better after treatment. In fact, many people feel so much better that they are able to discontinue their use of medication or other treatments for heart failure.

EECP therapy improves heart function, exercise tolerance, and quality of life. It is generally well acceptable, with the most common side effect being mild discomfort in the legs during treatment.

If you are considering EECP therapy, be sure to discuss it with your doctor to see if it is right for you.
