Symptoms of Chest Pain

When you experience chest pain, it’s important to pay attention to other symptoms that may accompany it. These can help you and your doctor determine the cause of your chest pain and the best way to treat it.

Common symptoms that may accompany chest pain include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Sweating
  • Lightheadedness or dizziness
  • Pain that radiates to your jaw, left arm, or between your shoulder blades

If you experience any of these symptoms along with chest pain, it’s important to seek medical attention right away. Chest pain can be a sign of a heart attack, so it’s important to get checked out by a doctor as soon as possible.

Diagnosis of Chest Pain

Diagnosis of Chest Pain

The diagnosis of chest pain has been done in various ways.

Medical History and Physical Examination:

A medical history and physical examination are generally the first steps in diagnosing chest pain. The doctor will ask about the nature of the pain (sharp, dull, aching, burning, or crushing), its location, and how long the person has been experiencing it. The doctor will also inquire about other symptoms, such as shortness of breath, nausea, and sweating.

During the physical examination, the doctor will listen to the person’s heartbeat and lungs and feel for any abnormal pulses in the neck, chest, and wrists.

Imaging techniques:

Doctors may also order tests, such as a blood test, electrocardiogram (EKG), chest x-ray, or stress test, to further evaluate the person’s condition.

Chest Pain Treatment With EECP

Chest Pain Treatment With EECP

EECP (External Counterpulsation) is a non-invasive, FDA-approved treatment for patients with coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, and angina who have not responded to other therapies. EECP involves the use of inflatable cuffs that are placed around the lower extremities and are synchronized with the patient’s heartbeat. The cuffs inflate and deflate in a specific pattern that increases the flow of blood from the legs back to the heart.

EECP has been shown to improve quality of life, exercise tolerance, and blood flow to the heart. It is also associated with a reduction in chest pain and an improvement in heart function.

Procedure for EECP:

EECP is typically performed for one hour, three times a week for a total of 30 sessions. The therapy can be done as an outpatient procedure or in some cases, may be covered by insurance.

Risks of EECP:

EECP is a safe and effective treatment for most patients. However, as with any medical procedure, there are potential risks and side effects associated with EECP. These include bruising or soreness in the legs, dizziness, fatigue, or headache. Serious but rare side effects include blood clots, heart attack, or stroke.
